Overview & Visitor Introduction
The Royal Collections Gallery is one of Madrid's newest major museums — a purpose-built exhibition space beneath the Plaza de la Armería, next to the Royal Palace, displaying centuries of Spanish royal treasures (tapestries, carriages, paintings, armor and decorative arts) that were previously scattered or in storage.
It is a fully independent, separately-ticketed attraction from the Royal Palace itself — geographic adjacency doesn't mean shared admission. Standard entry is €14.
History & Significance
Managed by Patrimonio Nacional (the same Spanish state body that runs the Royal Palace), the Gallery was purpose-built to finally give the crown's centuries-accumulated art and treasures — previously kept largely in storage or dispersed across other royal sites — a dedicated public exhibition space.
It opened to the public in 2023, making it one of the newer major additions to Madrid's museum landscape, and complements rather than duplicates the Royal Palace's own state-room-focused visitor experience.
