Sant Pau Recinte Modernista Guide: Tickets, Hours & the Guided Tour Question

The Sant Pau Recinte Modernista is a sprawling former hospital complex designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner, one of the leading architects of Catalan Modernisme, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. Standard self-guided ('visita lliure') adult admission is EUR 18.00 before 14:00 and EUR 17.00 from 14:00 onward. Reduced admission is EUR 12.00 for Barcelona residents, visitors aged 12-24, seniors 65+, and visitors with an officially recognized disability under 65%.

Admission is free for children under 12 accompanied by an adult, for unemployed visitors, and for visitors with a disability rating of 65% or higher. Online booking is recommended, and last admission is 30 minutes before closing.

A separately priced guided tour option also exists at Sant Pau, but its current price could not be confirmed for this guide — two secondary sources gave conflicting figures (roughly EUR 21 in one and roughly EUR 34 in the other), and neither was verified against the live official ticketing page. Rather than guess, treat the guided tour as a real option with an unconfirmed price, and check santpaubarcelona.org directly before assuming either figure. Standard Barcelona Card holders get a 20% discount off the official ticket price here — not free entry. The separate Barcelona Card Modernista tier is different: it includes one free admission per venue instead of a discount, which does mean free entry to Sant Pau on that specific product.

Domènech i Montaner designed Sant Pau as a 'garden city' hospital — a campus of individual pavilions connected by underground tunnels rather than a single monolithic hospital building, on the theory that patients recovered better surrounded by light, air, and gardens than in a traditional ward block. Construction ran from 1901 to 1930.

The complex functioned as a genuine working public hospital for most of the 20th century before medical services relocated to a new adjacent hospital building in 2009, freeing the historic Modernista pavilions to be restored and opened as the visitor site they are today. Alongside Domènech i Montaner's Palau de la Música Catalana, Sant Pau was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.
