St Mark's Basilica is really THREE to FOUR separate paid components, not one attraction: standard Basilica admission, the Pala d'Oro golden altarpiece, and the Basilica Museum/Loggia dei Cavalli/Terrace — plus the Campanile bell tower next door, which is a completely independent building with its own separate ticket and entrance (covered in its own guide, not here).

Ordinary tourist admission (€10) requires a mandatory online timed-entry reservation — visitors must enter within their specific booked slot. The current Basilica was consecrated in 1094, built to house the relics of St Mark the Evangelist, and its Byzantine-influenced domes and gold mosaics reflect Venice's historic trading ties across the eastern Mediterranean.

The Pala d'Oro, a jewel-encrusted gold and enamel altarpiece assembled over several centuries, is considered one of the finest surviving examples of Byzantine and Venetian goldsmith work anywhere in the world.
