Murano Glass Museum Guide: Tickets, Hours & the Glass-Blowing Demo Mix-Up

The Glass Museum (Museo del Vetro) on the island of Murano traces the history of glassmaking, including Murano's own centuries-old glass tradition, through historical pieces spanning archaeological Roman glass to contemporary art glass. Standard admission is EUR 15 adult / EUR 7.50 reduced, and no reservation is required.

An important point of visitor confusion: visiting the Glass Museum is a completely different activity from a commercial guided Murano glass-blowing demonstration tour sold by tour operators around the island. The museum admission ticket alone does NOT include a live glass-blowing demonstration — if you want to see glass being blown, that's a separate, privately-sold experience.

Murano is a separate island from central Venice, reached by ACTV public vaporetto lines — most commonly from the Fondamente Nove stop, with a crossing of roughly 40-45 minutes. Budget realistic travel time both ways when planning a Murano day trip.

Murano has been the center of Venetian glassmaking since 1291, when the Republic ordered the city's glass furnaces relocated to the island, largely to reduce fire risk to Venice's densely built center — a move that also helped concentrate and protect the guild's closely-guarded techniques over subsequent centuries.

The Glass Museum itself was founded in 1861 and is housed in the Palazzo Giustinian, a former bishop's palace, holding what is considered the world's most important historical collection of Murano glass, including Renaissance-era masterpieces and archaeological Roman glass sections.
